Writer's Retreat at Dao House in Estes Park, Colorado
Nestled against a backdrop of Colorado’s scenic mountains, just outside of Estes Park, Colorado, you’ll find a serene little spot called Dao House. With its sprawling grounds, log cabins and rustic lodge, it was immediately clear that Dao House was the place I’d gone searching for when looking for a place to go for reflection, inspiration, and relaxation.

Dao House hosts personal retreats, group retreats and weddings at their rustic venue, sat in a peaceful valley facing a breathtaking view of Longs Peak. During my stay, I got a sneak peek at several of their restorative services as well as their Artist’s Residency Program (which I can’t wait to return for).
I arrived at Dao House at dusk, just before the first snowfall of the year. As I pulled onto the property, I knew immediately that this was a special place. The property carried a tranquil energy that you simply won’t find anywhere else (I know, because this is not the only property I visited during my stay in Estes Park). I found later that the land which Dao House sits has had many lifetimes including serving as a gathering place of peace for local rival Native American tribes, a homestead and a guest ranch before it took on its current identity.
The log cabins, lined by colorful fall foliage topped with snow was a view to remember. As I rolled my suitcase into the main lodge I was greeted by the warmth of a massive stone fireplace, my thoughts were solidified: This was a special place.
My visit to Dao House was just after their last wedding of the season. During the winter months, the lodge shifts its focus to group retreats, but I was there to preview their Artist Residency Program, an opportunity for creatives to take advantage of the inspirational space Dao House has to offer at a discounted rate during the slower winter months (November - May).
As a part of the Artist Residency Program, writers, choreographers, musicians and other creatives can book two-week to two-month stays at the resort to live, work, and create. If you’re in need of a place to clear your mind or find inspiration in nature; you could not ask for a better place to do so than at Dao House.

Though it was cold, I loved stepping outside of my room to enjoy a little of my morning coffee and check out the scenery.
Over 86 acres of amazing trails for walking and reflection among a mountainous backdrop and beautiful aspen trees.
A cozy lodge (which can accommodate up to 30 artists).
A massive fireplace (the perfect place for a cozy writing session, in my opinion).
Several large, open spaces for visual projects or performing arts practice and choreography.
Ample quiet space, including cozy private rooms.
Restorative services including acupuncture, massage, oxygen therapy, and a state-of-the art wellness device called the Qu-BIT (Quantum Bio-field Infused Technology - which I got to try out).
Artists interested in participating in the Artist Residency Program must submit a project proposal for residency consideration. You can learn more about participating in this amazing program here. I was able to have an abbreviated taste of the Artist Residency Program and absolutely can’t wait to go back for the full experience. Dao House is truly a place to be still and be inspired.
